It was during the 3rd century BC that advanced mold-making techniques were realized. This realization lent itself to innumerable possibilities in regard to lamp shape and design, as well as commercial production. The nozzle on the Ionic lamp is long and usually splayed. It is believed that the splayed nozzle acted as a heat sink to cool the hot clay nozzle. Because of the length, the nozzles tended to cause an imbalance in the lamp, therefore, proper weighting of the body was required for stability. The shoulder area is wide, allowing ample room for decoration such as cables, tongues, and floral designs.
